How to Replace an American Standard Single Handle Cartridge (A951470)

Most American Standard single handle kitchen faucets (Colony Soft, Fairbury, Quince) use the A951470-0070A cartridge, which bolts to the faucet body with three screws. The Pekoe uses a 35 mm cartridge under a nut instead, and the Beale uses the M951483 35 mm kit. All three are replaced as a unit when the faucet drips with the handle off, leaks at the handle, or loses flow at full hot or full cold (which American Standard attributes to clogged cartridge inlets).

Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Parts and tools

Shut off both supply stops and open the faucet to drain it.

Steps (American Standard’s procedure for the Colony Soft, Fairbury, and Quince)

  1. Pry out the red and blue index button on the handle.
  2. Loosen the handle screw with a Phillips screwdriver and lift the handle off.
  3. Unthread the escutcheon cap by hand.
  4. Remove the three cartridge mounting screws (M918506-0070A) and lift the cartridge off the manifold. Remove the seals.
  5. Clean the manifold, the ports, and the seal seats. Debris here is the usual cause of low flow at full hot or cold.
  6. Seat the new seals in the ports of the new cartridge, set it on the manifold, and tighten the three screws alternately so it seats evenly.
  7. Reinstall the cap, handle, screw, and button. Open the stops and test.

Pekoe 4332 variation

The Pekoe handle screw takes a 2.5 mm hex key. After the handle, unthread the escutcheon cap, then unthread the cartridge nut (M962690-0070A) and lift the cartridge out. Reverse to install. A leak at the handle on a Pekoe is usually a loose cartridge nut.
