Moen Faucet Repair: Which Cartridge Do I Have?

Last updated

by Faucet Answers, an independent publication of TH4 Digital LLC

Almost every Moen single handle repair comes down to one part: the cartridge. Moen has used several different cartridges over the years and they are not interchangeable, so use this page to confirm which one is in your faucet before buying anything.

New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language. Not sure which cartridge you have? Identify it without a model number.

Which Moen cartridge do I have?

CartridgeWhere it is usedHow to recognize it
1225 (and 1225B)Single handle kitchen and bathroom sink faucets made before about 2009, and Standard and Moentrol single handle tub and shower valvesClear plastic shell with a brass stem. Held in by a U-shaped copper clip. Handle pulls or lifts for volume and rotates for temperature. The most common Moen cartridge in older homes.
1255 (Duralast)Single handle kitchen and bathroom faucets made from roughly 2009 on (Arbor, Align, Brantford, Adler, Genta, Method, and current Chateau)Brass and plastic body with no copper clip. Secured by a retaining nut. If your faucet is less than about 15 years old, this is probably it. 1255 replacement guide.
1222 (Posi-Temp)Single handle tub and shower valves with a rotate-only handleThe handle turns but does not pull or push. Rear plate has screws at the 2 o’clock and 7 o’clock positions. Pressure balancing cartridge.
1200Original all-brass version of the 1225, in faucets from the 1970s through the 1980sSolid brass, no clear plastic shell. Replace it with a 1225, which fits the same valve body.
4000 (and 40002)Single handle kitchen faucets 2005 to 2009, plus Dorsey 87007 and Torrance 87666Brass hexagonal retaining nut, no clip. 4000 replacement guide.
1269Sleek 7864 and other faucets from 2025 onRecessed black nut, 25 mm socket, new nut with each cartridge. 1269 replacement guide.
1224 / 1234Two handle faucets (Eva, Banbury, Bexley, Monticello two handle)One cartridge under each handle. 1224 vs 1234 guide.

If you have the model number (printed on the box, on the under-sink tag, or sometimes stamped on the back of the spout), the model pages below tell you the cartridge directly. If you do not have it, the shape of the handle and the age of the house are usually enough. Pre-2009 single handle faucets with a copper clip are 1225. Rotate-only shower handles are 1222.

You may not need to buy anything

Moen’s lifetime limited warranty covers leaks and drips for the original purchaser of the faucet for as long as they own the home. In practice, Moen will often ship a replacement cartridge at no charge if you call 1-800-BUY-MOEN (1-800-289-6636) with the model number. It takes a few days to arrive. If you want the faucet working today, the parts below are the same ones Moen ships.
