The Legend uses Moen’s adapter style handle from 1996 to 2009, which has more pieces under the handle than the Chateau. The 7/64 inch hex key (Allen wrench) is the one tool people usually do not have on hand. Handle replacement kit is Moen 93980 if the lever is damaged.

Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Handle and trim stack

Parts come off in this order. Lay them out in sequence so they go back the same way.

  1. Pry out the plug button on top of the handle.
  2. Remove the 7/64 inch hex set screw and lift the handle off.
  3. Lift off the dome.
  4. Unscrew the black pivot retainer.
  5. Remove the Phillips cartridge screw, then the adapter.
  6. Remove the pivot stop, retainer nut, and D shaped washer.
  7. The copper clip is now exposed.
