Moen Two Handle Faucet Cartridge Replacement (1224 and 1234)

Moen two handle faucets (Eva 6410, Banbury, Bexley, Monticello two handle, Brantford two handle, Bayhill) have a cartridge under each handle, and the cartridge is either the 1224 or the 1234. They look alike and do not interchange.

Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Replacement

  1. Shut off both stops and open both handles.
  2. Pry the cap off the handle, remove the screw, and lift the handle off.
  3. Unthread the cartridge nut (on 8 inch widespreads it is an embedded nut) and pull the cartridge out.
  4. Insert the new cartridge, refit the nut and handle. Do the other side at the same time; they wear together.

The same cartridge serves hot or cold. Moen 1224 cartridge on Amazon
