Moen MotionSense Faucet Troubleshooting

Moen MotionSense faucets (Arbor 7594E and 7594EV, Essie 87014EW, and others) add a control box and sensors to an ordinary 1255 faucet. The cartridge, hose, and wand are serviced exactly as on the manual version. This page covers only the electronics.

Not sure this is your faucet? See how to identify your Moen cartridge without a model number, or how to find your brand and model.

Power

Six AA alkaline batteries, about a year of use. The AC adapter service kit is 177565, the control box is 177568, and the wall mount kit is 177566. The U by Moen smart faucet uses six D cells instead. A blue LED flashing for 10 seconds means low batteries.

Generations

  • 2012 to 2015: grey control box with six hoses
  • 2015 on: black box with three hoses
  • 2018 on: Wave single side sensor, black box with a grey side

Disabling the sensors

With water on at the handle, hold your hands over both sensors for 5 seconds (one flash) to disable the Ready sensor, or 10 seconds (two flashes) to disable both. Repeat to re-enable. The faucet shuts off automatically after 2 minutes. Keep people at least 3 feet away during the 30 second startup after power is restored.

Dead batteries

Moen’s documents say the handle always works, so the faucet is usable manually with dead batteries. Moen does not publish a bypass beyond that. The Arbor Smart 7594EV parts list marks the cartridge and nut as non-serviceable items; call 1-800-BUY-MOEN for that model.
