The Monticello single handle kitchen faucet shipped with both of Moen’s top mount handle styles depending on the year, so the first step is identifying which one you have. Either way the cartridge underneath is the 1225.

Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Parts come off in this order. Lay them out in sequence so they go back the same way.

  1. Identify the handle style first: a small plug button on top means the adapter style (7/64 inch hex set screw under it); a flat cap means the collar and nut style (Phillips screw under it).
  2. Adapter style: plug button, hex screw, handle, dome, pivot retainer, cartridge screw, adapter, pivot stop, retainer nut, D washer.
  3. Collar and nut style: cap, Phillips screw, handle, collar, pivot retainer, retainer nut, washers.
  4. The copper clip is now exposed.
