American Standard two handle faucets use one of two cartridges under each handle. The 994053-0070A is a brass ceramic cartridge that is reversible between hot and cold. The M964005-0070A is the 15 mm Eco cartridge used in newer widespreads such as the Edgemere 7018.801. Colony two handle kitchens use the A954120-0070A.
Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Steps (994053)
- Shut off both stops and open both handles.
- Pry the index button off the dripping handle, remove the screw, and lift the handle off.
- Put a wrench on the hex of the cartridge and turn it counterclockwise to unthread it.
- Thread the new cartridge in clockwise until snug. It is reversible, so orient it for the side you are working on by moving the clip and rotating the cam washer if needed.
- Refit the handle. If the handle will not seat on the new cartridge, American Standard notes a new handle adapter may be needed.
