Delta Two Handle Faucet Stem Replacement

Delta two handle faucets have a stem unit under each handle. When one side drips, replace that side’s stem (older models also take new seats and springs under the stem). The part is model specific, so check the model page or Delta’s parts lookup before ordering.

Before you start. Shut off the two small valves under the sink by turning them clockwise, then open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. Plug the drain so small parts cannot fall in. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

Steps

  1. Shut off both supply stops and open both handles to drain.
  2. Pry the index button off the leaking handle, remove the screw, and lift the handle off.
  3. Unscrew the bonnet nut and pull the stem up and out. On seat and spring models, hook the seat and spring out of the port beneath.
  4. On seat and spring models, drop in a new spring (wide end down) and seat.
  5. Set the new stem in with its tabs in the body slots. Both stops must point toward the spout (toward the center of the faucet). On RP47422, the quarter-turn stop goes to the front on the hot side and the back on the cold side.
  6. Tighten the bonnet nut with a wrench. A hand-tight bonnet drips.
  7. Reinstall the handle and test. Do the other side at the same time if the faucet is more than a few years old.
