GrohSafe is Grohe’s pressure balance shower valve. The current GrohSafe 3.0 bodies (35110 through 35117) take the 48491000 cartridge; the older universal rough-in 35015 and the 35064 to 35066 bodies take 47995000; the 35250 series takes 47157000. All three replace as a unit when the shower drips, the temperature drifts, or the handle gets stiff.
Before you start. Shut off the water at the house main (shower valves rarely have their own shutoff), then open the valve to confirm the water has stopped. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? GrohSafe 3.0 steps (from Grohe’s 29331 trim sheet)
- Close the service stops with a flat screwdriver (vertical is off), or shut off the house water.
- Remove the handle set screw with the hex key (Allen wrench) supplied with the trim, then the handle, handle screw, and handle adapter.
- Remove the escutcheon.
- Unscrew the bonnet nut counterclockwise.
- Pull the old cartridge out. The 48491000 ships with a removal ring for exactly this; Grohe’s socket spanner 14139000 is the tool.
- Install the new cartridge with the UP text facing up. Reinstall the bonnet nut and tighten it firmly.
- Temperature limit: turn the stem to OFF (full cold), pull the hot limit stop forward, and rotate it counterclockwise one number at a time. Larger numbers are colder. Test with a thermometer; 120 F is the usual maximum.
- Refit the adapter, handle, and set screw. Open the stops and test.
Hot and cold reversed
A GrohSafe 3.0 body installed with the supplies crossed (Grohe calls it Orientation B) is corrected by rotating the flush plug and cartridge 180 degrees per the valve sheet. If the shower runs hot first and cools as you turn toward hot, that is the fix.
