Identify Your Kohler Valve Without a Model Number

You do not need the model number to find the right Kohler part. The cartridge can be identified from what the handle does, what is under it, and what the cartridge looks like once it is out. Work through the checks in order and stop when one matches. Each result links to the repair page and to the manufacturer’s part page, which has a photo you can compare against.

Before you start. The first checks need no tools. The later ones mean removing the handle, so shut off the two small valves under the sink first (or the house main for a shower) and open the faucet to confirm the water has stopped. You will need a screwdriver and a hex key (Allen wrench). Start here explains how a handle comes off.

Kohler has more valve designs than any other brand on this site, and the valves do not interchange. The model number is the fastest route, and on older Kohler faucets it is on a white tag wrapped around the cold supply line under the sink, so check there first. If there is no tag, the checks below narrow it to one or two parts.

Check 1: what kind of faucet?

  • Single handle pull-down kitchen, bought since about 2010 (Simplice, Bellera, Cruette, Purist, Elate): 25 mm valve GP1093674. Confirm in check 2. Single handle valve replacement.
  • Single handle kitchen from the 2000s (Forte, Clairette, older Fairfax and Vinnata): 35 mm valve GP1016515. Confirm in check 2.
  • Budget single handle kitchen or bathroom (Coralais, Avatar, Fairfax K-12171 series): plastic valve GP77548, or GP30413 on Coralais bathroom faucets.
  • Two handles: go to check 3.
  • Single handle shower: Rite-Temp. Rite-Temp repair.

Check 2: single handle, measure the valve

Remove the handle and the cap or sleeve under it, unscrew the retaining nut, and lift the valve out. Measure across the bottom of the valve body.

  • About 25 mm (1 inch), green plastic: GP1093674.
  • About 35 mm (1 3/8 inch), white or black top: GP1016515.
  • Plastic, with the model in the Fairfax, Avatar, or Coralais families: GP77548.

Check 3: two handles, how old and what layout?

  • Faucet from 1990 to about 2010 (Finial, Purist, Memoirs, Revival, Bancroft, Antique): GP77005-RP under the hot handle and GP77006-RP under the cold. Brass quarter-turn valves. Two handle valve replacement.
  • Widespread (three separate pieces) from 2011 on (Devonshire, Forte, Artifacts, newer Revival): UltraGlide GP1092204 (hot) and GP1092203 (cold).
  • Centerset (one base) from 2011 on (Elmbrook, Easmor): GP1152349 (hot) and GP1152350 (cold).
  • Hot and cold valves are different part numbers in every Kohler two handle faucet. Replace both, and do not swap them.

If none of these match

Pull the cartridge out, take a photo of it next to a ruler, and either call Kohler (the number is on the Kohler page) or take it to the plumbing desk at a hardware store. Cartridges are matched on sight every day. Do not buy a part until it is matched; most are not returnable once opened.
