Glacier Bay Tub and Shower Cartridge Replacement (Aragon, Builders, Lyndhurst)

Glacier Bay tub and showers share a pressure balance valve across the Aragon (HD874X) and the Builders, Lyndhurst, Edgewood, and Marx trims (HD873X body). The Aragon cartridge is RP22020, which appears to be the same part Home Depot sells as RP90012; the 873X cartridge number is not legible on the published sheets, so call 1-855-434-5224 with the model number. Danco 10321 fits the older 873 series but not the current Lyndhurst.

Before you start. Shut off the water at the house main (shower valves rarely have their own shutoff), then open the valve to confirm the water has stopped. You will need a screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or pliers, and for most handles a hex key (an Allen wrench, sold as an inexpensive set at any hardware store). If a shutoff valve will not turn or starts to drip, or anything is corroded and will not loosen with moderate force, stop and see when to call a plumber. New to this? Start here explains the parts and tools in plain language.

  1. Shut off the water at the stops behind the escutcheon if present, otherwise at the house main. Open the tub spout.
  2. Remove the 2.5 mm hex screw inside the handle and pull the handle off.
  3. Pull the sleeve (RP8029701) and remove the two escutcheon screws (RP5006601) and the escutcheon.
  4. Unscrew the bonnet and pull the cartridge straight out. Note the hot side orientation and the scald limit stop position.
  5. Install the new cartridge the same way around. On the Aragon there are also separate hot and cold flow set screws on the valve.
  6. Reset the limit stop and check the maximum output with a thermometer; 120 F is the target.
  7. Reassemble and test.
